  • Leading People Doesn’t Mean Suffocating Them

    February 9, 2012

I’m confident to know I’m good at a lot of different things.

I want bore you with the list of superlatives that I feel falls into that category (For instance, I play a mean game of horse).

Suffice it to say, I have my giftings as a leader and entrepreneur that have served me well lo these many years as I’ve worked to build a company.  I also have those things I fall short at... which again, I won’t delve into for the sake of brevity or ego  LOL.

My point is, as an entrepreneur, it’s important to realize the things you excel at so you know what strengths to focus on.  It’s also important, you give up control of trying to do everything in your business yourself and learn to put your faith in others to fill in the gaps. You’re NOT a one man (or woman) operation and if you try to be, by micromanaging, then you’ll run into a whole host of problems down the pike.

Empowering people to do what they’re good at will do more for your company’s productivity than anything you could imagine. People naturally want to feel they’re contributing toward a goal and are deeply appreciated for their level of expertise. Micro-managing runs the risk of dashing their confidence and suffocating their effectiveness at their jobs.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t have an overall sense of what’s going on in your company. You need to be updated every so often on every area of your business. My point is, trying to micromanage each detail and department will ONLY leave you with sleepless nights of worry...antacid wrappers on your nightstand... and an alienated staff afraid of constantly being shot down.

The key is investing faith in your people by letting them do their thing.
Surround yourself with great people who work hard...learn to lavish trust...and see if that doesn’t catapult your business to the next level.
